Word Of The Day

Ahankara

Etymology: Aham, I; kara, doing; ahan-kara: “I am the doer.”

Ahankara is the sense of I-ness, which creates a sense of separateness from others. It creates the sense of “me” and “mine.”

Aham is the foundation of spiritual ignorance and the seed of moha, illusion.

Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita (16/18):

ahankaram balam darpam kamam krodham ca samshritah
mam atma-para-deheshu pradvishanto ‘bhyasuyakah

“Out of egotism, violence, pride, desire and anger they are envious and hateful of Me, who dwells both within their body and the bodies of others.”

I am sure that this ego has caused a great many problems in our lives and looking back we could have made life much better and happier without it. Therefore we should forsake ahankara and the delusions it creates and become one with Lord Krishna (paramatma).
